The Murang’a West Water and Sanitation Company (MWEWASCO) has recently completed a significant project funded by the World Bank aimed at enhancing sanitation and hygiene in Kangema Sub-County and adjacent areas. Through an investment totaling Sh4 million, the initiative focused on constructing 200 modern toilets across Kangema, Gakira, and Kahuro towns.

Led by Eng. Ephantus Kamau, Managing Director of MWEWASCO, the project’s primary objective was to mitigate health risks associated with poor sanitation, particularly prevalent during the rainy season. The introduction of modern toilets is expected to reduce waterborne diseases and elevate hygiene standards within the community. Eng. Kamau highlighted that improved sanitation would also contribute to increased productivity among residents.

During the project’s initial phase, Eng. Kamau personally distributed compensation cheques to residents who had installed these upgraded facilities in their homes. He emphasized the importance of community participation in adopting modern sanitation practices to maximize the project’s impact.

Looking forward, MWEWASCO plans to expand similar sanitation improvement initiatives to larger towns like Kangema, Gakira, and Kahuro. The company remains committed to ensuring that any remaining funds from the project revert back to the Water Fund, demonstrating responsible financial management and accountability.

MWEWASCO serves the Kiharu and Kangema Sub-Counties, underscoring its dedication to providing reliable water and sanitation services to local communities. This initiative not only addresses immediate health concerns but also lays the foundation for sustainable development and improved quality of life in the region.
