The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) of Kenya recently convened a stakeholders’ meeting aimed at accelerating the country’s progress towards achieving World Health Organization (WHO) Maturity Level 3 (ML.3). This significant milestone focuses on enhancing regulatory frameworks to ensure widespread access to safe, effective, quality, and affordable medicines and vaccines across the nation.
Chaired by Dr. Fred Siyoi, the CEO of PPB, the meeting assembled key representatives from various influential organizations, including the United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and Biovax. The collaborative effort aimed to evaluate current progress, strategize for institutional advancement, and outline a comprehensive roadmap to attain and sustain ML.3 maturity.
Central to the discussions were identifying critical areas that require governmental and stakeholder support to achieve ML.3 status. This includes strengthening regulatory capacities, ensuring product quality control, and improving access to essential medicines and vaccines nationwide. The meeting emphasized the need for robust partnerships and collaboration among stakeholders to effectively address these challenges.
Dr. Ahmed Mohamed, Director of Health Products and Technologies at PPB, and Dr. Wilfred Ochieng, alongside other senior management officials, actively participated in shaping the strategic direction of the meeting. Their insights and contributions underscored PPB’s commitment to advancing regulatory standards and healthcare access in Kenya.
Dr. Siyoi highlighted PPB’s ambitious goal to achieve WHO Maturity Level 3 by 2025, aligning with Kenya’s broader healthcare agenda aimed at achieving universal health coverage (UHC). He stressed the importance of sustained support from stakeholders, including government agencies, development partners, and private sector entities, to successfully implement and sustain these improvements.
The PPB’s initiative reflects a proactive approach to addressing healthcare challenges in Kenya, particularly in improving sanitation and hygiene standards. By strengthening regulatory frameworks and fostering collaboration with international and local stakeholders, PPB aims to create a conducive environment for the provision of quality healthcare services to all Kenyans.
